Working as a Nanny on a Salaried Basis – What Does It Mean for You?

When the match with a family is right, the employment conditions are just as important. Working as a salaried nanny offers you many benefits and security as a professional:

  • Paid sick leave: you are entitled to continued pay during illness, just like in any regular employment.

  • Net income: no need to handle income tax deductions or file provisional tax returns; you receive a net salary directly.

  • Unemployment insurance: in case of job loss, you may be eligible for benefits through the UWV.

Many nannies still work as freelancers under the Home Services Scheme. This scheme is mainly advantageous for parents: it reduces costs for households employing domestic staff and requires little to no administrative effort. Key points include:

  • Paid sick leave: parents only pay for a maximum of 6 weeks if the nanny is sick;

  • No social contributions: lowering costs for parents, making it financially attractive;

  • Simple administration for parents: no payroll or social contributions need to be managed.

Limitations for the nanny:

  • Freelancers under the Home Services Scheme do not have a full social safety net: there is no entitlement to benefits or continued pay during long-term illness, unemployment, or other circumstances.

  • Additionally, you must file an annual income tax return and pay income tax and the Health Insurance Act contribution. You need to set aside part of your monthly income to cover these payments to the tax authorities.

For this reason, Kroost Nannies offers nannies the option to work with a full employment contract, providing security during illness or unemployment.

This system makes it easier for childcare professionals to switch to this form of childcare and provides families with reliable care from an experienced, motivated nanny.

Not only pedagogical professionals benefit from this setup. Healthcare workers or others with qualifications suitable for home-based childcare who love working with children can also make the switch easily.

Are you currently a nanny or home-based childcare provider working under a Home Services Scheme agreement? We would be happy to tell you and the family you work with more about these improved employment conditions!
